Having governance that is fiscally sensible, accountable, efficient, and responsive to the unique needs of Waiheke is what all Waihekeans want.
Well over a year ago, the Our Waiheke team asked our fellow Waihekeans whether they would support a separate Waiheke Council. Our survey showed 64.8% of respondents in favour, and over 1800 people signed a petition favouring independence. Since then, dissatisfaction with Auckland Council’s “Super City” has increased even more, convincing us that the single most important issue for Waiheke right now is getting its own council.
With the local body elections coming up, we believe it is important to us all to know which Waiheke Local Board candidates favour a separate council. We have researched the candidates’ statements on Facebook and other media, and the accompanying list shows their public stance on de-amalgamation at present.
We ask you to consider this very important matter when you are deciding who to support in the upcoming local body elections.
